My Perspective of Writing: The Pros and Cons

Writing is a form of expression that I find to be both frustrating and beneficial at the same time. In the past, my relationship with writing was complicated—I didn’t find writing enjoyable, but I didn’t find it annoying either. Although, overtime, I have grown to enjoy the freedom of expressing myself through my writing, the process of shaping my ideas, and the creativity that writing brings to my thoughts. However, I managed to build up irritation and displeasure towards writing alongside the enjoyment that I developed.
To begin, I found that gathering my thoughts down on paper can be challenging, as I often have to consider not just the content itself but the verbal, grammatical, and punctual aspects of writing as well. Compared to verbally discussing a topic out loud, writing is more time consuming and requires a focused mind since it has to go at the pace of your pencil hitting the paper—not at the pace of your thoughts coming to your mind, which is the rate that speaking can follow. Additionally, it can be demanding and inconvenient to imitate passion when writing about a topic that doesn't resonate emotionally. But even with genuine interest, it can be difficult for writers to convey enthusiasm if their language isn’t thorough or descriptive enough. If someone spoke the same words that were written, the speaker could use their tone, volume, and body language to show excitement and emotion towards the topic, allowing the listener to sense the feeling that the speaker is attempting to express.
Despite all the struggles that writing can bring, I believe that the advantages that writing provides overshadow the cons. For example, writing allows me to achieve a suitable portion of information without using excess words or insignificant details. As opposed to conversing, writing is more organized, coordinated, and orderly. When talking, it is easy for my mind to get off track since there are distractions, such as background noise, people walking by, and other conversations nearby, keeping me from focusing on what I am going to say next. Writing doesn’t distract me from my ideas; instead, writing keeps my mind on a train of thought, allowing my thoughts to flow on paper. Moreover, writing offers an easy way to unburden thoughts without public disclosure, especially when you’re unsure how to voice them clearly.
In conclusion, my relationship with writing has evolved into a complex but rewarding experience. Though writing can be irritating due to the effort and precision it demands, writing ultimately provides me with a process to express my thoughts with clarity and creativity, helps me stay focused, and allows for a deeper level of self-expression. Even with its challenges, the technique of writing is an essential part of understanding my thoughts and ideas.
