The Russia-Ukraine war, which has been raging for three years, may see a ceasefire soon. After the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, multiple ceasefires have been proposed, but one has yet to be implemented. However, that may soon change with a new opportunity for a truce. During a meeting with U.S President Donald Trump in Saudi Arabia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy supported the U.S proposal for an unconditional 30-day full interim ceasefire. While the leaders of Ukraine and the U.S. have reached an agreement, Russian President Vladimir Putin has yet to accept the proposed armistice.

While Putin hasn’t accepted the temporary truce, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that “[Putin] said that he supports President Trump’s position in terms of a settlement, but he voiced some questions that need to be answered together” (CNBC). Putin’s concerns included how Ukraine would use the time granted by the armistice. He believed that the temporary truce would bide Kyiv’s forces the time to supply weapons or train newly mobilized units. Nonetheless, he expressed his support for the suspension of hostilities, urging further discussions with Washington to address his concerns.

Additionally, Zelenskyy criticized this response, making a Telegram post stating that “Now the world sees how Russia is deliberately putting forward conditions that only complicate and delay everything, because Russia is the only entity that wants the war not to end and diplomacy to break down.”

Days later, Putin had a 90-minute call with Trump on March 18, 2025. The two leaders agreed that negotiations will begin immediately in the Middle East. Furthermore, both presidents agreed to a ceasefire against energy infrastructure, showing significant progress towards a truce on the frontline. Trump described the call with Putin as “very good and productive” on Truth Social. The following day, Trump and Zelenskyy had a call where the Ukrainian president agreed to the partial ceasefire plan, agreeing to halt attacks on energy infrastructure, marking a step toward a broader armistice. The exchange was described by Zelenskyy as “positive, very substantive and frank”, in contrast to their fiery meeting in the Oval Office in February. He further praised the progress made, saying that he believes that Ukraine could have “lasting peace” this year.

In conclusion, with recent diplomatic efforts, Ukraine has accepted a 30-day ceasefire proposed by Trump. However, the attempts to end the Russia-Ukraine war encountered an obstacle when Putin raised concerns about the truce. Nonetheless, the leaders of America, Ukraine, and Russia continue their negotiations, which have thus far achieved a partial ceasefire. The situation continues to develop, raising hopes that an armistice may soon be agreed upon.
